Raxis
TYPE DESIGN
How would a Latin typeface that was inspired by Devanagari calligraphy look?
Raxis was my first typeface designed in 2018 at Type@Paris, a rigorous five-week type design workshop. It started with the idea of exploring the unconventional solution of reversing the axis of Latin pen angle or right-handed angle that is usually the base of most Latin typefaces.
The inspiration was traditional Devanagari calligraphy that follows the opposite angle which is the left-handed angle.
This is where Raxis gets its name from – Reverse Axis.As Devanagari calligraphy follows left-handed calligraphy and I am left-handed, it added a layer of personal connection with the inquiry.
